Penrhyn Quarry was the greatest slate quarry in the world, and in the late nineteenth century was supplying roofing slates in vast quantities to the world. The conflict from the start was between the Anglican and conservative owner and the Welsh-speaking quarrymen, most of them radicals and non-conformists from Bethesda. The conflicts over working conditions and union recognition culminated in the years 1900-03, and the longest dispute in the entire history of industrial relations.
